I was looking thru Ironsearch and found many used tractors for sale in Canada. I noticed that some of the names offered in Canada have no dealers in US. How would the prices compare between US and Canada, are there differences, or is it just a different selection? Also, I assume I can buy a used tractor in Canada and bring it to US (Idaho) without any problems (fees, customs)? How about a new one?

Funny you should ask that, cause I was thinking the same thing. My daughter is into Highland dancing and we travel to Canada at least twice a year to competitions so I keep my eye out for attachments. I have only researched the tax issue and it looks as if agriculture items are tax exempt. (duty free?) The part I haven't looked into is the model/country differances in the tractors themselves. Is a USA B2710 the identical to the Canadian B2710? 4200? TC33? Try the web site below although it's kinda confusing unless you can translate government babble into realworld explinations. Good luck and let us know what you find out. The exchange rate at the bridge was 49% and 46% that last two times over. ....

The exchange rate is not quite that good, however, I have discovered that you can purchase many US manufactured items in Canada for less than could be purchased locally. This has been for me so far primarily electronics as the shipping is not prohibitive. I have attached a link to the Bank of Canada for a currency exchange rate calculator, which by the way is about 67% now.

Jerry, did you do the electronics "mail order"? Or was this an in person purchase then shipped home? Did you apply to get the GST back? How did it all work. I do know that I will never put an item on a charge card while in Canada again, the card co. ripped me by 10% on the exchange rate! I have since exchanged at the bridge (from MI. it's the only way in) and paid cash. ....

'Tip of the Day' for our friends from south of the border, when shopping in Canada, use your Interac Debit Card, this way you get the Bank's current cash conversion rates, not the Credit Card companies (Visa, M/C, etc.) rate, which can be VERY different. Also, applying for the GST rebate is simple, stop at Canada Customs BEFORE leaving Canada and they will give you a form and 'certify' that the goods did in fact leave Canada, you will then recieve a cheque in the mail for the amount of the tax, this also applies to the Provincial taxes. Secondly, yes SOME things are cheaper here, but check carefully, some US mass-produced items are less expensive still due to the 'economy of scale' factor. Once you have found a dealer in Canada you are comfortable with you can continue to deal with them in confidence by phone, most will happily do this and even arrange transport to your door State-side. If anyone is interested I would be happy to give some references of some dealers here that I know from personal experience to be great to deal with. Best of luck. ....

Thanks for the info; I might keep track of purchases next trip to Ontario. My kids love the appropriate "squeeze right" road signs that we see. "Merging" is not as fun. ....

I know now that I can get the GST back when I buy a tractor in Canada. How about US taxes, do I have to pay any tax on the border on a new tractor. How about used tractor? ....
